INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP AESTHETIC HABITS: THEORIES, EXPERIMENTS, AND PRACTICES
The Workshop “Aesthetic Habits: Theories, Experiments, and Practices” officially inaugurates the project HABITUS – Habits, Aesthetic Behavior, and Improvisation: Theories, Uses, Studies, funded by the Italian FIS programme and directed by Alessandro Bertinetto.
This first meeting marks a crucial step in launching the scientific activities of the project and assessing the current state of international research on the relationship between habits, aesthetic experience, and artistic practices. In recent years, the notion of habit has become a central topic in philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and the social sciences; more recently, it has also emerged as an important theme in aesthetics, where it intersects with questions concerning perception, taste, creativity, normativity, and forms of life.
In line with the interdisciplinary approach of the HABITUS project, the workshop will provide an opportunity to critically discuss the main theories of aesthetic habits and to initiate a dialogue among the three research strands that will shape the project over the coming years:
• philosophical and theoretical research, devoted to the conceptual elaboration of the notion of “aesthetic habit” and to the analysis of its role in aesthetic experiences and practices;
• psychological and neuroscientific research, aimed at empirically testing theoretical hypotheses through experimental studies on aesthetic experience and habit formation;
• research on the arts and aesthetic practices, exploring the role of habits in music, visual and performing arts, cinema, design, fashion, and food practices.
The Workshop aims to create a space for exchange among scholars from different disciplines, fostering the development of an international research network and catalysing future research on the topic. Through lectures, discussions, and round tables, the meeting will address issues such as the formation of perceptual and cognitive habits, the relationship between habit and creativity, the social and cultural dimensions of aesthetic practices, and the contribution that aesthetics can make to our understanding of processes of individual and collective change.
