Webinar: the ongoing controversy concerning Cultural appropriation in th arts and fashion, by James o. young

June 18, Tuesday

Time: 17:00 Lisbon time

Speaker: James O. Young (University of Victoria, B.C.)

Platform: Zoom

The debate concerning cultural appropriation continues to be a source of controversy. The scope of the debate has expanded from the arts to include food, fashion, and other areas of culture. The grounds on which people object to cultural appropriation are also shifting. At least in philosophical circles, people are less inclined to object to cultural appropriation on the grounds that it can involve theft. Instead, cultural appropriation is thought to be, at least some of the time, a form of oppression, invasion of privacy, or objectification. This paper will express skepticism about some arguments for the conclusion that cultural appropriation is objectionable, while granting that some appropriation is objectionably harmful or offensive.

CFP - SPECIAL Issue of «PHILOSOPHIES»: THE AESTHETICS OF THE PERFORMING ARTS IN THE CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE, ed. by Alessandro bertinetto

In recent years habits have been at the center of the international philosophical debate, both in the perspective of historical as well as in theoretical and empirical research. Since habits may be thought to involve monotony and lack of creativity, how can habits be reconciled with aesthetics? The present issue of “Aisthesis” aims to discuss this question by focusing on the connection between habits and the aesthetic life.
